John Whelan is the managing director of Digital Assets and Cryptoassets at Santander Corporate & Investment Banking's headquarters in Madrid.  He has been involved in projects related to cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology since 2014, and has led many blockchain-based initiatives since joining the bank in 2016 as head of the blockchain lab. 

John founded a start-up funded with Silicon Valley capital, which was blockchain-based and focused on institutional credit ratings. He also has extensive experience with many of the various blockchain technologies, such as Bitcoin, Ripple, Ethereum and Corda, among others. 

Prior to entering the blockchain universe, John spent 10 years in the business consulting industry, and after his MBA worked briefly as a market maker at the Chicago Board of Options Exchange from 2001-2002. 

John holds an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from University College Dublin and an MBA in Finance from DePaul University in Chicago.
